The Mediterranean Institute for Investigative Reporting (MIIR) is a non-profit organisation based in Greece. Founded in January 2019, its core purpose is the defense of the public interest through independent, investigative journalism.

Amidst an environment of crisis and a largely discredited journalistic profession, MIIR’s team aspires to play a key role in the creation of an investigative reporting ecosystem in Greece and the Mediterranean. At the core of MIIR’s philosophy lie the principles and ethics of independent, speaking-truth-to-power journalism.

MIIR currently consists of a team of five core members, all journalists, who each come from different professional backgrounds with various levels of experience and skills. MIIR’s establishment as a legal entity (Social Cooperative Enterprise) was completed in January 2019, without any external resources other than the contributions of its members. Since then, MIIR has managed to maintain a constant frequency of high quality journalistic output, increase its visibility and collaborate with publishing partners in Greece & Europe, and gain an ever-growing audience. MIIR is a core member of the European Data Journalism Network (EDJNet), and has published stories in collaboration with international partners and Greek daily newspapers

MIIR’s investigations are provided to the public free of charge. MIIR’s financial model safeguards its independence, and aims to secure resources from donations from the public as well as from institutions and organizations that do not interfere with MIIR’s content production and publishing, seeking to bolster its long-term viability.
