GITEGA/BELGRADO - The Burundi Balkan Route offered several thousand Burundians a way out of their homeland in crisis in 2022.

As a result of Serbian Kosovo diplomacy, an estimated 8,000 Burundians travelled to Serbia without visas. After the sudden increase in Burundian asylum applications was noticed, Europe put pressure on and Serbia closed the door.

Journalists Alain Majesté Barenga and Elien Spillebeen examined the human consequences of a series of remarkable political decisions.
