M100 Young European Journalists Workshop 2024

The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop (M100YEJ) will take place for the 20th time this year!

Under the topic “Live Journalism: Fake News and Disinformation in Election Campaigns” the M100 Colloquium organisers are inviting about 20 young journalists from all over Europe to deepen their knowledge with experts in practical and theoretical exercises. The workshop will also allow participants to learn about the different conditions and challenges for journalism in different political and social systems and to exchange ideas and network with journalists from all over Europe.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, in order to make journalism more tangible and accessible, and to establish a direct connection between journalists and “the people out there”, the organisers are bringing journalism on the stage!
In the first part of the workshop, participants will learn more about the content, while in the second part they will learn how to present their work live in front of an audience.

The M100YEJ will consist of two modules:

1. Modules with the experts Dr Katja Muñoz (DGAP) and Caroline Lindekamp (Correctiv) who will work with the young journalists in theory and practice on the topic of “Fake news and disinformation in election campaigns”: In the super election year 2024 we want to teach participants how authoritarian governments are increasing their efforts to manipulate the information ecosystem worldwide in order to undermine democratic institutions, promote their own interests and strengthen their autocratic allies. Regional authoritarian actors are also increasingly working with global allies such as Russia and China to spread messages that harm democratic institutions. What is the impact of disinformation on elections? How can it be detected and countered, and who is behind it? Which elections have seen the most disinformation campaigns in recent years, and for what purposes? What is happening in this area around the upcoming US elections?

2. An introduction to the practice of live journalism: How do you rewrite a piece of research, a reportage, a column for the stage, and how to perform it on stage? The first live journalism show took place in California/USA in 2009. Seven years later, the editorial team of the Finnish daily newspaper Helsinki Sanomat staged the first live journalism show in Europe and organised the first live journalism conference in 2022. Live journalism is a stage show with real journalists who perform their work in front of a live audience in a vivid, moving and entertaining way.

The M100YEJ provides young journalists from different parts of Europe with in-depth knowledge on the complex topic of “disinformation to influence election campaigns” and develops a short live programme with them based on this knowledge.

On the evening of 11 September, some of the participants will perform a public reporter slam in Potsdam on the topic of “Disinformation in election campaigns”. On 12 September, all participants will attend in the international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium, where the best performance will again be presented.

 

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Young journalists between 20 and 30 years old from Europe, including the Eastern Partnership countries, can apply with a text in English on the following topic:
● Disinformation threaten democracy and public debate. Counter-measures are needed at many levels, involving media, politics, civil society, research and other stakeholders. Please briefly describe an example (prebunking or debunking) from your country of an innovative approach to detecting and combating disinformation that is worth discussing. We are particularly interested in local or national efforts that may not have been widely recognised abroad.
