CLUJ-NAPOCA / LISBON / ALYTUS / PRAGUE – Cities are not very pedestrian-friendly, and small children are among the most vulnerable groups. One solution is tactical urbanism, a method that opens a discussion about the design of a specific area, making it possible to convince all stakeholders of the need for permanent changes.

Several schools in the Czech Republic have implemented tactical urban planning. We bring you a report from a school in Prague that has recently completed a space in front of its main entrance, where children can walk and relax away from the threats of cars.

Unfortunately, similar projects are hampered by political unwillingness and the complexity of construction processes. Prague is made up or more than twenty city districts that decide many things autonomously. Subsequently, the process becomes even more complex when preservationists and the police get involved. It is difficult to reconcile all needs, which hinders projects. In terms of pedestrian safety, Prague is one of the worst metropolises.
