BRUSSELS – Journalists with good ideas for a cross-border investigative journalism project have two months left to apply for a Journalismfund.eu working grant. The application deadline is 15 September.

BRUSSELS - When Indian journalist Shyamlal Yadav uses his right to access to information via the Right to Information Act, national politicians had better watch out. Yadav is FOI (or RTI) specialist at his news outlet Indian Express. He knows like no other how to take heaps of requested documents and extract a news story out of them, often cornering many a Member of Parliament and Minister.

BRUSSELS - Two and a half years. That’s how long it took Joris Luyendijk to map out the financial sector. In the summer of 2011 he started investigating the social mechanisms in the financial sector, without knowing anything about it. He shared his insights and discoveries on The Guardian’s banking blog—and now at the Dataharvest Conference in Brussels, too.

Once again Brussels was the sizzling centre of European data journalism during Journalismfund.eu's Dataharvest+ conference from 8 to 11 May. Journalists, coders, researchers and data specialists came together to get trained, discuss ideas and share skills with colleagues from all trades. Here is a storified recap of the conference.

“One of the first revelations to me was that financial journalism is not aimed at the public. It is aimed at the financial world,” Dutch journalist Joris Luyendijk said at a presentation at the Dataharvest+ conference 2014 in Brussels. For three years now, he has been writing about the financial world of London City.

The new European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly will be one of the headliners at the Dataharvest+ Conference, 9-11 May in Brussels. A former investigative journalist, she will talk about access to documents and Frontex, the European border management agency, among many other things. In anticipation of Dataharvest+ we talked with her office.
