Mykolaivski Novyny is one of the oldest independent media outlets in the south of Ukraine.

The first issue of the newspaper was published on 20 April 1995. To date, it has published 4,161 issues. It was the first publication in the Mykolaiv region founded by journalists. The online edition, niknews.mk.ua, has been available since 2000. Its audience is residents of southern Ukraine.

The purpose of the media has changed due to military aggression, and now aims to provide the population with information in the face of social challenges.

In spring 2022, Russian tanks were stationed in the suburbs of Mykolaiv and a missile strike damaged the editorial office and its equipment. Consequently, the newspaper was not published for three months. However, the niknews.mk.ua website remained operational.

Between 2023 and 2024, it received almost 8.8 million page views (Google Analytics 4). After being temporarily relocated to neighbouring Odesa, the newspaper was able to resume publication in the summer of 2022.

The newspaper's circulation ranges from 1,050 to 20,000 copies.

The target groups are: socially disadvantaged groups, women, refugees, internally displaced persons, the elderly, and residents of the Mykolaiv region who moved to Europe and the United States during the war.
