May is an award-winning journalist who specialises in reporting on marginalised groups, she was previously social affairs correspondent for The Independent in the UK, where she gained recognition for her reporting on asylum and migration. During this time she won the Anti-Slavery Day award for Best News piece twice and was shortlisted for the Specialist category in the British Journalism Awards.
