Mattia Bagnato is an Italian freelance journalist who specialises in reporting on migration, social justice, and environmental issues.
From 2016 to 2021, he worked as a freelance reporter for various Italian media outlets.
He earned a Master's degree in Advanced Journalism and Reportage from Ramon Llull University in Barcelona in 2018. During his three years in Spain, he reported on issues such as minority rights, gentrification, drug trafficking, housing struggles and anti-eviction movements. He also produced a short film called 17:14 – When Football Met Politics, which explores the connection between Catalan separatist movements and local football clubs.
In 2015, Bagnato spent a year travelling through the Balkans along the so-called 'Balkan route', documenting the journeys of thousands of migrants attempting to reach Europe as part of a backpack journalism project.
More recently, in 2024, he started to focus on environmental reporting, covering protests against the planned construction of a nuclear waste site.
