Manuel Bívar

Manuel Bívar was born in Lisbon in 1985.

For 10 years he studied the forests of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. He has written two novels: A Charca and Os Mamíferos, as Aves e os Peixes. He is currently working as a journalist for the Portuguese magazine Divergente, preparing a report and a podcast on forest arsonists. He has a degree in landscape architecture, a PhD in history and is a farmer.

MONCHIQUE / HERMISENDE - In recent decades, forest fires in Portugal and Spain have reached unprecedented levels, with these two countries registering the largest burnt areas in Europe. Intentional arson is one of the main causes of fire. The investigation by Divergente and El Confidencial tried to see the reasons behind.
