Kris Berwouts (1963-2023) was a Belgian independent researcher and writer, immersed in West and Southern Africa.

Kris studied African linguistics and history in Ghent. He worked for 25 years for various Belgian and international NGOs and built up a solid reputation as an expert on Central Africa, specialising in peace and democratisation processes in the region.

Since 2012, he has worked as an independent researcher and writer, focusing on West and Southern Africa. He wrote Congo's violent peace (2017) and My life as a mushamuka. Sketches from Rwanda, Burundi and Congo (2020). His research on the transition of power between Joseph Kabila and Félix Tshisekedi was supported by Journalismfund's Pascal Decroos Fund.
