BUCHAREST - EU residents are buying 40% more clothing than a few decades ago, with less than half being collected for reuse and only 1% recycled.

Besides “traditional” fast fashion chains there are new ones like Shein or Temu, flooding the European market with poor quality and in many cases unhealthy clothing. Moreover, used clothing sales platforms like Vinted have emerged. They potentially prolong the life cycle of clothes but may also encourage continued consumption.

In our project, we will try to understand whether the alternatives to fast fashion are sustainable from an economic, social, and environmental perspective. In many cases, they are not 100% viable yet. Therefore, we will also analyze which solutions– legislative, technological, and consumer-related– are needed.
