Alternativas Economicas

BARCELONA – Women working in the care sector in the Barcelona area (region of Catalonia), who often also perform domestic work, face additional challenges related to their immigrant status.

The project seeks to raise awareness and empower immigrant women working in the care sector in Barcelona through digital communication workshops and a campaign designed and led by the workers themselves. The campaign focuses on their rights, access to resources and networks, and social recognition. Our aim is to empower these women by equipping them with tools to improve their situation through communication. In addition, a debate will be organised with organisations that work with them, alongside experts in public policies related to care.

A dossier will be published in our magazine, Alternativas Económicas, to explore the specific reality of this marginalised and invisible group and to try to influence public policies related to their situation. A dedicated section of our website will host all the information generated by the project.

Alternativas Económicas SCCL is a worker cooperative that primarily publishes the magazine Alternativas Económicas. The cooperative comprises around one hundred members, eight of whom are also staff members of the magazine. The workers themselves control the company (they hold 70% of the voting rights) and guide the editorial line of the publication.

The best guarantee of our independence is that the magazine has been primarily financed by our readers, through various subscription options, since its launch in 2013.

Goals (expected) of the project

There is currently no communication project focused specifically on immigrant women working in the care sector in the Barcelona area. The limited information available about them is mostly statistical and quantitative in nature.

Our approach aims to make this essential yet invisible work visible, improve the social recognition of immigrant women caregivers, and empower them through communication. By providing these workers with digital communication tools, the project is not about speaking about them, but speaking from them.

In the short term, at least five women will be empowered through training and the opportunity to publicly share their voices, and others will receive training. In the medium term, the campaign will help build support networks and improve access to resources among women workers in the sector. In the long term, it will generate social and institutional debate that can influence public policies, dignify care work, and promote cooperative models.

The content produced will remain available as a permanent resource on the Alternativas Económicas website. The project is designed as a replicable pilot model for other vulnerable groups.
