This cross-border investigative project highlights the serious impact of heavy truck traffic on communities along the Croatia–Serbia border, particularly in Banovci, Ilača, Tovarnik, but also all the other up to Mirkovci in Croatia as well as Kukujevci, Gibarac, Bačinci and the town of Šid in Serbia.
Due to drivers avoiding highway tolls, local roads have become de facto freight corridors, causing noise, pollution, property damage, and danger to pedestrians. Despite local protests and official promises of bypasses and infrastructure improvements, little has changed, and residents continue to bear the burden.
This reporting highlights the need for urgent, coordinated action to redirect transit traffic and protect the quality of life in these border communities.
